Travel highlights: Manatee Amazon Explorer
May 27, 2011
Amazon cruises have been popular for years. What many people do not know is that in Ecuador this option is also available. The Manatee Amazon Explorer is the only cruise in the Ecuadorian Amazon basin, a 30-passenger, first class riverboat that navigates along the Napo River. Its operations started in 2002 and today its service and high quality keep up to clients’ needs and interests, and safety requirements. The boat was named after the largest river mammal in the Amazon, the Amazonian manatee. Though smaller than its cousins, the Amazonian manatee can measure up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) and weigh over 1000 pounds. It spends almost half day sleeping and the rest of the time it grazes plants in shallow waters. Interestingly, manatees are the only herbivore marine mammal and they change teeth all through their lives. Manatees breed once every two years and have only one calf at a time, so their populations can decrease easily if hunted by humans or if their habitat is destroyed; natural... Read More →

The location is Utah’s wild and scenic Green River as it flows north to south through the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservations carving the deepest canyon in the state. The week-long trip follows the path of Butch Cassidy’s “Wild Bunch” and explorer Major John Wesley Powell, who titled the barren landscapes “Desolation and Gray Canyons – a region of wildest desolation”. However, Dvorak’s “river magic” journey for families along the Green River is far from roughing it. Professional guides handle all the details and are adept at knowing the needs of children and parents in the wilderness. Healthy prepared meals, often ‘Dutch Oven Style’,... Read More →

May 24, 2011
Salt Lake City, UT– This spring / summer promises to be one of the top 10 best high water years on record for the Colorado River System in Utah and Arizona, reports Brian Merrill, CEO of Western River Expeditions http://www.westernriver.com/ that 50 years ago helped pioneer the sport of river rafting on white waters of the West. “It’s possibly the best water year ever on Utah’s Green River in our half century of river running,” Merrill said. He noted that for raft enthusiasts and whitewater adrenaline junkies “2011 is THE year to book a river trip through Westwater or Cataract Canyons of the Colorado River or Gray and Desolation Canyons on the Green.” Also, the Bureau of Reclamation is releasing extra flow from Glen Canyon Dam which means higher water through the Grand Canyon this year. (The water release strategy is an effort to increase the level of Lake Mead.) Merrill anticipated that high water would continue through late July this year; ordinarily it tapers off at the... Jeff Fuchs on the Salt Road. WildChina Explorer Grant Beijing, China–WildChina provides adventurers the opportunity to turn their outdoor visions into real advancements in China exploration. The WildChina Explorer Grant is a grant of USD $1,000 to $3,000 that will be awarded to adventurers seeking to push the boundaries of responsible, off-the-beaten-path travel in China. WildChina’s own story is one of exploration, self-discovery and challenge. High up on the slopes of Tibet’s Mount Kailash, Mei braved the high altitudes and harsh landscapes to find true beauty of snowcapped mountains alight with the sunrise. The breathtaking view brought Mei a sense of fulfillment—yet she stood alone and exhausted from her journey. Disappointed by how little support was available for travelers looking to get off the beaten path in China, Mei was inspired to start her own travel company dedicated to offering stress-free and responsible travel to adventurous destinations. The creation of The... Read More →
